Hiking

- some tips...!

It’s almost impossible to visit Northern Norway and not be tempted to go on a hike in our fantastic and wild nature.

As you will discover, the nature here in the north is characterised by mountains and fjords, but still has large variations from place to place. In our area, you will find “friendly” mountains – few peaks exceed 1000 m above sea level.

Hiking in Harstad and the surrounding region

On the Trondenes Peninsula, a cultural heritage and nature trail has been built in an historic area. In Folkeparken , there is a marked network of trails and wider tracks in the mountains and forest in varied terrain. You will also find beautiful lakes and "gapahuker" (rustic shelters) where you can brew coffee and grill sausages on an open fire

The best view of the city can be enjoyed at Gangsåstoppen , which is a relatively simple 15-20 minute walk from the city. Facilities here include benches and a telescope.

Mt Aunfjellet is situated a 15-minute drive from Harstad. This is a good area for hiking where you quickly get up into the high mountains and where you can gaze out over the sea from steep slopes.

On the island of Bjarkøy , an historic walk will take you in the footsteps of our forefathers. We also recommend that you go on the hike over the “mountain” that covers the whole island.

The island of Grytøya has demanding hiking trails in uneven terrain, are are suited best to those who like wearing themselves out. You will discover extremely beautiful mountains offering views of the “World’s end”.

There are also marked hiking trails in other parts of the region. Those worthy of mention include the trail from Lake Blåfjellvann to Vilgesvàrre in Skånland Municipality, the nature trail around Lake Strandvannet in Evenes Municipality and the route from Sand to the lakes of Sandsvannet and Trollvannet in Tjeldsund Municipality. In Kvæfjord Municipality, we recommend the hikes to Melåa, towards Storhornet and in the area around Vik.
