-Harstad Municipality is situated on Hinnøya, the largest island in Norway. The city an important centre of commerce for the entire region and a trading centre for South Troms and northern Nordland.
Harstad is called the Cultural city of the North, and offers a diversity of cultural activities year-round, especially the annual Festival of Northern Norway, when the streets are teeming with people and you can experience music in pubs, churches and the cultural centre. Many cultures meet for an exciting festival in the Midnight Sun.
The world’s northernmost stone church, dating from 1250 is set in picturesque surroundings and includes art treasures and some beautiful features, including three triptychs, preserved chalk paintings and a 14th century antependium. Remains of Norway’s oldest preserved sail were found in the ceiling.
The church still houses many mysteries and is an experience for visitors. if you combine a visit to the church with a visit to the exhibitions in the adjacent Trondenes Historic Centre, you will also acquire background information about the knowledge we have about this building.

In picturesque surroundings at Trondenes Fort lies the Adolf Gun, the world’s largest land-based gun. The calibre on the gun mount is 40.6 cm and the gun has a range of 56 km. The fortification was built by the German military during World War II.
Since 1990, tours and maintenance of the gun have been taken care of by retired personnel who have served at Trondenes. The Friends of the Adolf Gun put in hundreds of hours of volunteer work each year to restore and maintain the gun.
