- has throughout time been a vital traffic vein between the north and south. The name of the strait, and eventually of the municipality, is derived from the word ‘tjelle’, which means to camp for the night. Archaeological finds in the region bear witness to settlement dating back several thousand years. The best known is the Steinsvik sword from the Viking age.
The municipality is geographically spread with one part on the island of Hinnøya, another on the island of Tjeldøya and a third on the mainland. The nature is beautiful and changing and summer nights are light. Here, you will discover fertile lowlands, mountains, peaks and straits. The landscape and surroundings are ideal for activities and adventures, including fishing, boating, hiking and playing on the beach.
There are several attractions to visit and it is well worth taking in summer events. A wide spectrum of activities is available in the municipality. Welcome!
