From Harstad, the journey goes to the former trading post Hemmestad in Kvæfjord (towards Refsnes). A country store, fish oil barrel and a traditional Nordland boat are all creating a feeling of magic taking you back to the past. ‘Kvæfjordkaka’ (Norway’s national cake) is a tempting feature in the pier café.
The journey continues to Borkenes and Trastad Collections, telling the story of a residential and care facility for the mentally disabled – the first of its kind in this region. Pupils were taught art with astounding results. Be amazed by the world’s largest collection of art (26,500 items in total) made by mentally disabled people.
Continue north to the viewpoint Nupen, and a little further on you encounter Skjærstad Herring Oil Factory, the only herring oil factory from early 1900s preserved in its original state. It was opened in 1922 and was in operation for only 6 years until 1928. Open by appointment with Sør-Troms Museum.
As you then head for the sea coming towards Harstad, there is a signpost to Røkenes Farm. This is an old trading post and guesthouse from 1750, today a first-class restaurant/café and gallery.
